Marcia Hero has been creating art since the age of 8 when she took classes at the Milwaukee Art Museum. She studied oil painting, as a young adult, while living in Monterrey, Mexico, and continued to paint while living in San Salvador, El Salvador. She focused on hand building clay pottery while studying fine art at Mount Mary College in the 1990s; began to paint with soft pastels after taking classes from artist Pamela Scesniak, and currently studies oil painting under artist Lorin Willey.
Since 2008 she has participated in several group and juried shows with the Wisconsin Pastel Artists, and in 2009 won 2 honorable mention awards for her pastels “Nuthatch”, and “Paws for Reflection”. She received 2 Meritorious Entries for her pastels “Pen Pals” and “Sunset on the Marsh” in the 2009 Richeson 75 Pastel Competition book, and 3 Meritorious Entries for “Gertrude Jekyll Rose”, “Sunrise in Cabo”, and “Siblings” in the 2009 Richeson 75 Small Works Competition book. Marcia was awarded an honorable mention for her painting “Sunlit Slope” at the Wauwatosa Plein Aire Affair in July of 2009.
Most recently, her pastel "Betty Boop Rose was accepted into the 2010 Richeson 75 Still Life and Floral competition.
Marcia currently volunteers as Vice President of the Wisconsin Pastel Artists, is a member of the League of Milwaukee Artists, the Wisconsin Visual Artists, the Milwaukee Art Museum, and several other art related organizations.
“I have no ethereal philosophy about painting. The attempt to convey the beauty in the subject I’m viewing exalts my mind and spirit. The drama created, when painting very dark, or drapery backgrounds in still life, is thrilling, as is the conveyance of the reflective qualities of glass or metal objects, or the tactile stimulus of animal fur. It all stirs emotion through my senses, sometimes to the point where I can hardly contain my enthusiasm.”
